Offered for auction is an interesting religious stamp featuring Saint Anthony holding baby Jesus, with the acronym S.A.G. Stamps with this acronym refer to “Saint Anthony Guide”, and are based on a legend involving Saint Anthony of Padua. A Spanish merchant left in 1729 to establish a business in Lima, Peru, leaving his wife behind. Over many months the wife sent many letters to her husband, but received no replies. Fearing the worst, she wrote a final letter and placed it in the hand of a statue of St Anthony in the church of St. Francis at Oviedo. The next day, she found a reply from her husband in the hand of the statue, along with 300 gold coins. In memory of this event, the practice arose of writing S.A.G. (St. Anthony Guide) on letters placing them under the protection of St Anthony to ensure each letter arrived safely to its proper destination. To encourage this practice, several types of stamps were produced by religious organizations, usually featuring a portrait of St Anthony holding baby Jesus, with the letters “S.A.G” written above or below. The stamp offered here is in mint no gum condition (see scan). A seldom seen item to grace your Canada Back-of-Book or Cinderella collection!
